     Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival

    Kawazu Cherry Tree(河津桜), a kind of cherry tree originated in Kawazu-cho of Shizuoka, is a typical seasonal feature to announce the arrival of the earlier spring in the Izu Peninsula. The Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival is a yearly big event in Kawazu-cho held between early Febraury and early March, attracts more than 800,000 people each year. The festival is scheduled from Febraury 10th to March 10th this year.

    Overwhelming beautiful scenery created by a row of Kawazu cherry trees

    Kawazu Cherry tree is characterized of larger size and deeper pink flower comparing with Someiyosino mostly seen in Japan. The Buds begin to shoot out by the time of late January and flowers with deeper pink blossom for one month till early March.

    A row of cherry trees stretches about 4km along the Kawazu river and it’s seemingly a pink tunnel at the time of full bloom.  It’s very impressive!

    This is a virgin wood originated in Kawazu cherry tree. Its seeding was found at the bank of Kawazu river by Mr.Iida in 1955 and planted in his garden. It had been ten years since he tried to raise from its seeding and to bloom the cherry blossoms. Repeatdly planted at the riverside from this virgin wood, cherry trees are splendidly lined for a very long distance as we know it today.

    Cherry trees are lit up between 18:00 and 21:00 during the festival, and visitors will enjoy viewing cherry blossoms, creating a fantastic atmosphere different from the daytime.

    A carpet of yellow rape blossoms

    Yellow rape blossoms all over the river bank begin to bloom at the same of Kawazu cherry trees, which emphasize the beauty of Kawazu cherry blossom, creating the amazing scnery.

    Kawazu cherry trees in Kawazu-cho are in full bloom from the mid-Febraury, so it’s good to visit there to feel coming of earlier spring, where a lovely view of Kawazu cherry blossoms is waiting for you.
